Along with my sister and a score of others, we met Miss Austen at the Pickwick Society Tearoom in Frankfort, Illinois. As we munched on wonderful food and tea, Miss Austen regaled us with stories of her life, readings from her works, and witty repartee on "all things Austen."
Our menu included
- A fruit medley of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries
- Chicken with chutney on wheat bread
- Ham and cheddar on dark rye bread
- Cucumber Sandwiches
- Watercress Sandwiches
- Lemon scones with clotted cream and raspberry jam
- Plum tarts
- Honey madeleines
- Shortbread cookies
- Camomile or English Breakfast Teas
The Tearoom is a lovely place. Tiny tables were set with vintage tablecloths and each place setting had a unique cup and saucer. Each guest received a programme and a favor: a silver bejeweled box with tiny mints inside. Lovely!
The day was beautiful, so after tea and perusing the whimsical tea gifts and items for sale in the tearoom, we took our leave of Miss Austen and we walked along one or two streets in historic Frankfort, looking in shop windows and enjoying the fresh air. Certainly a very Austen-esque ending to a fun afternoon!
(Ed. note: Miss Austen was played by the talented actress, Debra Ann Miller. Brava! She made us feel as if time had melted away and we were indeed in Miss Austen's company.)
